Thought-provoking, and emotion-provoking too, for a recovering Southerner constantly having to reconcile herself with her upbringing, her personal gifts, her deep guilt about all of it. I first heard about Newton Knight and the Free State of Jones in a movie a few years back starring Matthew McConaghey. These days I often watch the TV show "Home Town" (and I read your article about it) showing what a lovely town Laurel MS is. There is probably no place on earth with more twists in its history, still proclaiming itself the typical American small town. What a complex and weighty load we carry, dear friend. I'm so glad to have gotten to know you!
Rich, insightful and as always, so well written!
Thank you, Kevin. Always appreciate your take.

You have been such a blessing in my life as well. A kindred spirit.
